Lynne Wheeler

Executive committee member

Lynne is a senior lecturer and programme lead in mental health nursing at Wrexham University. Before joining academia, she spent more than 25 years working in statutory mental health services across Wrexham, including roles in inpatient detoxification units, community substance use services and primary care mental health.

She is passionate about supporting people who have experienced relational trauma and attract a “personality disorder” diagnosis. Throughout her career, Lynne has been committed to supporting this group of people who she noticed were too often misunderstood, stigmatised and treated harshly within mental health services. She believes in the importance of compassionate, relationship-based approaches that recognise the impact of trauma and support people to build lives that feels meaningful to them. She co-facilitated therapeutic groups based on therapeutic community principles and worked within Wrexham’s personality disorder service until its funding was sadly withdrawn.

Lynne also holds a master’s degree in Mindfulness-Based Approaches from Bangor University and has facilitated a range of mindfulness programmes, including Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR).

When she’s not working, Lynne can usually be found spending time with her son and her rescue poodle, discovering new music, or enjoying live performances. With an eclectic taste that spans many genres, her favourite weekend of the year is Focus Wales Festival in Wrexham.
